Exploration :- The first civilization of India was the Harappan (Indus Valley) civilization, contemporary with the world's oldest civilizations such as Mesopotamia and Egypt.  This world class civilization was revealed to us with its great features (1921).  Under the leadership of Sir John Marshall and Colonel McKay (1921) Dayaram Sahni discovered a site called Harappa in the Montgomery district of the Punjab.  Since the site was first discovered near a village called Harappa, the entire civilization has been named Harappan civilization in the tradition of archeology.  R .  D.  Banerjee (1922) discovered an important Harappan site called Mohenjo-daro in Singh's Larkhana district.  This trend continued throughout the 20th century.  About 1000 Harappan sites have been discovered in India so far.  Gujarat is likely to have about 100 sites of Harappan civilization.  We call the Harappan civilization the earliest historical civilization, because we have not yet been able to decipher the Harappan script.  That is to say, the information about the Harappan civilization on various aspects of the life of the people and its relationship with other civilizations can be found only through archeological remains and excavations.
