The Indian Criminal Code, 1860 (IPC) was drafted in 1837 by Sir Macaulay, the first Chairman of the Law Commission of India, and was presented to the Governor General by Sir Macaulay in 1838.  The first overview of the draft was made by Sir Barnes Peacock, a forensic expert at the time, and was completed in 1850.  The Indian Criminal Act, 1860 was passed by the then Viceroy Lord Canning on October 6, 1860.  Act no. 1860 of the then Central Legislative Assembly.  XLV was created.  The Indian Criminal Code, 1860 (IPC) has a total of 23 chapters and 511 sections.  The Indian Criminal Code, 1860 came into force on January 1, 1862.
