The authentic history of Gujarat begins with the beginning of Chandragupta Maurya Maurya period and the time of Chandragupta Maurya.  The reign of Chandragupta Maurya dates back to BC.  Was 324-298.  Chandragupta appointed Pushyagupta as the suba of Saurashtra and his administrative headquarters was Girinagar or Ujjayant i.e. present Girnar.  Pushyagupta built Sudarshan Lake to streamline agriculture through canals.  Shirinagar was the capital during the Maurya period.  BC  In 298, Chandragupta Maurya abdicated and was initiated into Jainism.  By 273 Bindusara had advanced the Mauryan Empire.  The Maurya emperor Ashoka's heart was changed by the violence he witnessed on his way to victory over the Mauryan emperor Ashoka Kalinga and 14 inscriptions were carved in the country emphasizing interfaith harmony.  One of the inscriptions of Ashoka is located near Damodar Kund in the foothills of Girnar.  The inscription is in Brahmi script.  It was first discovered by Colonel Todd and described by James Prinsep.  The inscription of Emperor Ashoka is 3.6 m above the ground in the foothills of Girnar and the lower part is 22.86 m in diameter.  The inscription contains details of Emperor Ashoka, Vatrap Rudradama and Emperor Skandagupta.  Under the ancient Grahami script of India, Emperor Ashoka is described in Pali and Rudradama and Skandagupta are described in Sanskrit.  According to Jain scriptures, Gujarat was also ruled by Ashoka's grandson Samprati but over time the Mauryan rule came to an end and the Saka-Tantrap period began.
